17th Edition Exam Preperation Guidance

Prepare yourself for the 17th edition electrical exam with some past exam papers. They will help you to know what to expect in the exam and help you bookmark your IET wiring regulations BS7671 handbook where the questions will come out of. When Wiring a Consumer Unit

When wiring a consumer unit you need to first look at the earthing arrangement of your supply. Is it a TN-S, TN-C, TN-C-S or a TT earthing arrangement supply? The maximum disconnection time for your Residual Current Device for a TN-S earthing arrangement supply must be 100ms. So its important to know the supply in order to know how to wire a consumer unit and the earthing and bonding connected to it.

A TN-S supply has a separate earth and neutral to the service head in your property where as a TN-C system as the earth and neutral combined and would require the installer to add an earth rod as an additional earth to the supply.
Where a Prospective Fault Current exceeding 30 kA exists at the origin of an installation, it is strongly recommended to use a Residual current device as the main point of isolation in the Consumer Unit.

The best earthing arrangement for domestic properties which is also commonly found in urban areas are PME systems or as standard referred to as TN-C-S. You will need to inspect the service head well before identifying which earthing arrangement your property you are working on has. This will determine how you will connect your earthing and bonding conductors.

Wiring a Consumer Unit Should Not Be That Hard

I wired up my first consumer unit when I was qualified as an electrician 15 years ago. Wiring a consumer unit is not as hard as it looks . Yes, there can be a load of wires initially sticking out that needs connecting up. But in truth if the wires that was pulled in for all the circuits was labelled up properly, it should not be difficult. A qualified and self respected electrician would do that. All radial circuits will only have 3 wires coming in and a ring main circuit will have 6, Live neutral and earth. All the earths will be connected on the same connector block or bus bar and all the neutrals on the same connector block or busbar inside the consumer unit. The lives get connected to the individual MCB’s or RCBO’s. Make sure that if its a split load consumer unit that all the neutrals from all the circuits before after the RCD needs to be connected separately together.

When selecting a consumer unit to buy for installation, always go for the well known brands like Crabtree, MK, GE and so on. They are much better laid out and bus-bars are easier to work with. Having a consumer unit that is cheap may frustrate you tremendously when wiring it up.

Potential Difference

What is potential difference? Well the reason we are concerned with potential difference in the trade and in any electrical installation is that it means that current can flow from one conductive material to another if the two objects or materials are at different potentials. The flow of electricity is always from a higher voltage to a lower voltage.

An example of this is if you have a stove in your kitchen with no earth connected to the exposed conductive part (the body of the stove) and which has a fault internally that has a loose live that is in contact with the exposed conductive part, you will get an electrical shock if you touch the exposed conductive part and any earthed or bonded body like the kitchen sink. This is because the stove’s body (exposed conductive part) is at a potential difference to the sink which is at “0 Volt”. The electricity wants to flow from the stove at “230 Volt” to the earth at “0 Volt”.

To protect ourself from electrocution all exposed conductive parts and extraneous conductive parts in our homes and any environment for that matter needs to be bonded or have a connection to earth.

When to Use an Electrician or Do It Yourself

Approximately 90% of the devices in and around our homes uses electricity to function. Electricity is one of the biggest evolutionary key discoveries by humankind. Electrical devices do fail occasionally due to the natural stresses electricity puts on a device. Heat, vibration, and so on. When an electrical device fails, we have a tendency to do three things. Either we call out an electrical engineer to fix the item or we may seek out the help of our inherent experience to mend the item. Alternatively we might throw the item out and buy another.

Some people are born with that special ability to fix anything by themselves. Give them any broken electrical device and they will fix it within hours. Unfortunately the rest of us will have to seek the aid of a qualified electrician.

This is presented to the visitor so they will have an idea about the capabilities of the electricians and the company.

Not all electricians provide an emergency electrical service and this information can often be found on their website. Sometimes, for corporate purposes electricians might work in unison. Many reputable electrical companies that are found on the Internet are known to employ electricians who are capable and efficient at the same time.

Electrical Symbols

Electrical symbols are widely used in the electrical design industry but do not form part of the 17th Edition wiring regulations test. You will though need to know how to read electrical drawings and know what electrical symbols mean on them. You sould get familiar and get an introduction to electrical symbols when you do your City & Guilds 2330 qualification.

To know your symbols is important as well when trying to fault find electrical faults from drawings. Understanding the drawings is key. To understand electrical circuits is cruisial in the bigging of your electrical studies and its probably one of the first thing you will get involved with when doing your qualification.

Electrician Essex

To be an electrician is not for the faint hearted. You need to work on the side of safety and follow safe procedures but to be an electrician can sometimes be a risky job.

You need to be able to take risks in an orderly manner and be able to work with live wiring. To work with live wiring can be done in a safe manner with the correct equipment and safety gear. Insulated gloves, insulated screwdrivers rated to 1000V and long tools to use where its not advisable to put your hands in, for instance long nose-pliers.

Do the Questions in The 17th Edition Exam Reappear

Someone called me the other day that was interested in buying the 17th Edition Exam Papers on our website. His main concern and reason he was interested in the papers was to know if these questions in the 17th Edition past exam papers where the same that would appear in all 17th Edition Exams.

The answer to that is yes and no. Many Of the questions are of similar structure and nature. They may not be asked in the same way but they would cover the same topic as previous 17th Edition exam papers. The questions would cover the same section of the 17th edition Wiring Regulations.

My personal recommendation on using past 17th Edition Exam papers is to bookmark the questions in the Wiring Regulation as this is where similar questions will be coming from. Remember that the test is an open book test.

London Electricians

In order to become a London Electrician you will need to obtain the right qualifications. You not only have to do an apprenticeship but will need to have completed the appropriate subjects and qualifications at an approved college. You will need to do your 17th Edition Wiring Regulations BS7671 City and Guilds 2382 and City and Guilds 2391: Inspection and testing.

This will allow you to do electrical installation work as electrical contractors in London. The competition in London for good electrical services is very high and to survive in the market you will need to deliver a good reliable one.

Do not be tempted to take shortcuts!!!
